This is Alex Lowther-harris’ poetical review.

Impressions of unreal city

“Sustained and distorted.

A wretched grind to a pleasant pulse.

A pulse leathered through un-treatment and constant effort.

A mass veined and currently oppressed by your interaction of a space.

A mass compiled. Arranged in strange curiosities and mended on brilliant strengths.

Such wandering voices, a strange emptiness.

Vibes of concrete, an image of a city, an image angled and re-evaluated.

Concern diminishes.

Clatters of different noises.

A vast array of sound pulsating through the half light.

Lost in a new/unreal world.

An unreal city rises out of near nothing.

A group chats and engages.

Strange noisy place grinds into earth night.

The commissions explore the innovative use of advanced sound technologies housed at the University of Salford’s Acoustics department.

UNREAL CITY is a multi-media collaborative installation from Generic Greeting Collective members, taking place in Blankspace, Manchester from the 2nd - 8th May. This installation is spread across five rooms and seeks to create an immersive, multi-sensory environment, one that will act as a physical extension of the music. This album consists of the music made solely for the installation; each track accompanying a different room within the exhibition.

“My work is informed by techno-capitalist iconography and signifiers present in the architecture of cities, in art and in popular culture,” says Florence, “I am interested in electronic music and the constantly evolving digital climate in which it is produced and distributed, and the social and political analysis of popular culture, architecture and urbanism.”

A launch night will take place on Thursday 2nd May from 6-10pm at the gallery, featuring DJ sets from Generic Greeting’s FREnchfire and Big War, both contributing music for the installation. There will also be a bar, and space in the downstairs gallery displaying work from other members of the collective.

Generic Greeting Present: Unreal City

UNREAL CITY is a multimedia installation by Florence Platford in collaboration with members of Generic Greeting.

The installation is spread across five rooms in Manchester’s BLANKSPACE gallery and seeks to create an immersive, multi-sensory environment informed by techno-capitalist iconography in the architectures of cities, in art and in popular culture. UNREAL CITY features visuals by Liam Healy and music produced specifically for the event by Big War, Ffrenchfire and Kernon.

There will be a launch night on THURSDAY 2ND MAY at the gallery from 6pm-10pm, featuring live sets from Big War and Frenchfire. The exhibition will then run until 8th May.

The exhibition and launch night are both free.

BLANKSPACE is located on Hulme Street, off Oxford Road. If approaching from Fallowfield/Withington, it’s a left turning before the Palace Hotel.

Our first stand-alone exhibition.

It included a range of mediums including illustration, photography, graphic design, film installation and audio interpreting Siberia.We aim to explore the region’s history, religion, architecture, politics and art.

Generic Greeting Collective was founded in October 2010 by George Haydock,Will Berry, Liam Healy & Rich James. It set out to combine Illustration, Film & Music. It has now grown to twelve members including illustrators, designers, film makers, photographers, producers, DJs,VJs and more from around the UK.

‘Edition’ was a collaborative project with DR.ME, SAVWO and the University of Salford
DR.ME and SAVWO are some of the most prolific and highly regarded members of Manchester’s young design scene. With an impressive and growing list of clients from Umbro to Manchester International Festival their left field approach has record labels and bands clambering for their wares in a city well used to receiving international acclaim for it’s creative energy.
Designers Ryan Doyle (DR), Mark Edwards (ME) and Designer/Printmaker and University of Salford Artist in Residence John Powell-Powell Jones (SAVWO), were inspired to create the ‘Edition’ project by Screen prints produced by master printers from the Manchester Print Workshop in the 70s and 80s held in the University of Salford’s art collection.
‘Edition’ brought together the DR.ME and SAVWO studios in a disused space in the centre of Manchester. For the 2 weeks ‘Edition’ became a powerhouse for ‘new work for work’s sake’, where they created prints, zines, drawings, paintings, postcards etc in limited runs. They were joined by design and illustration students from the University of Salford who worked alongside them.
The work created during the fortnight was exhibited at the new temporary studio/gallery space ‘Edition’ over the weekend 2 - 3rd February 2013.

Promoting a course in Zen Buddhism, at a space above Terrace Bar down Thomas Street in Manchester.
Starting on the 5th of February 2013.

It’s a 10week course every Tuesday, £5 per session.
